A Larger Family
Winter 2020
Advisor: Tei Carpenter
Honored w Adrian DiCastri Graduate Student Award, 2020
This project looks to explore the ways that space is shaped by the unique requirements of both community and family, understanding family as a dynamic term, a family is more complex then a mother, father, and 2.2 children; a family is created through relationships, whether that be young or old, male or female, of many individuals or few. The project looks to engage this through the creation of both programmatically and spatially flexible spaces, that allow families the freedom to utilize space in ways that are equally as unique as the family itself. The shared spaces within the project look to engage a in a conversation of shared domestic labours and family rearing; setting the stage for activities such as community dinners, shared childcare, and creating a network of support for one another. The plan operates in a way as a social condenser that supports the transition of neighbours into family members and the idea of apartments into multi-family and multi-generational households.
Multigenerational and Multifamily Households in Toronto
Multigenerational and multifamily households are on the rise in Toronto, together representing roughly 8% of household living situations in the city today. Although currently representing a small portion of the population this number is growing, within the last 5 years the number of multigenerational households has increased by 12% and multifamily households has increased by 6%, where, in comparison, the total number of households has only risen by 5%
Multigenerational and multifamily households offer the opurtunity for families to share in domestic labour and create a larger network of support and care for one another as well as easing the financial burden of housing.
