Storm Surge:

Higher water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean may cause more intense hurricanes and along with sea level rise will cause higher storm surge.

The pattern of storm surges are dependent upon the elevation of the land, the pattern of coastal bathymetry and the intensity of the storm wind speeds and directional speed.

A category 2 storm affects 87% (74,000 buildings of $8 billion value) and a category 3 storm affects more than 99% of the city (+55,000 buildings and +$6 billion in value).

With climate change, higher, stronger storm surges will reach farther inland. This may lead to saltwater intrusion causing plant and animal mortality and contamination of surface and aquifer drinking water supplies.
