Carbon Heritage
Winter 2023
Advisor: Tomas Folch
The project is motivated by the history of a material both as it relates to cultural understandings of place and its environmental impact. The focus of this argument is centred within the context of deconstruction of the urban environment as this process usually sends massive amounts of carbon intensive material to landfills while separating community members relationships with this space all at once.
Specifically, within the context of the soon to be demolished 42-acre Bunker Hill Community Housing site, the project looks to reuse construction and demolition waste from a landscape perspective to keep materials on site and in use, acknowledging their heritage value while also addressing climate challenges of the near future city. This is achieved through a process of topographic and ecological interventions that looks to make materials, their mass, and their scale, active and visible across the site.
