Urban Flow
Fall 2018
Advisor: Alissa North
Urban Flow is a project that deals with the complex multi-modal forms of circulation that take place within downtown Toronto. The project is a proposed connection node between Toronto’s growing Railpath, the city’s pedestrian and cyclist trail network, and the cities street grid situated at the corner of Queen St. W. and Gladstone Ave. The site divides two areas of intense circulation; the upper level, rail path connection features the main cyclist and pedestrian artery cutting through the city running parallel with commuter and freight rail lines and the lower level, street grid connection with heavy pedestrian, cyclist, tram, and automobile traffic. The project studied these flows by breaking them down into two variables, speed and frequency, in order to analyze all modes of flow as a single value. This study suggested that the site, in order to provide a fluid transition between the Railpath and street must do two things: maintain the speed of cyclists on the site and increase the frequency of pedestrians on the site. This provoked a design of the park space into two main elements: a cyclist interchange and pedestrian pods.
