Wellinton Visitors Centre

Winter 2018

Advisors: Matt Kennedy & Mark Erikson

In collaboration w Daniels Faculty colleagues

The project stands outside the rural town of Wellington, Ontario three hours east of Toronto. The town has been experiencing a shift, becoming the regional centre of arts and culture, paired with a burgeoning wine industry the town is rapidly shaping into a tourist hub. The project was commissioned by the town’s chamber of commerce to serve as an all seasons stop for tourists to receive travel and attraction information and was to reflect the unique culture and atmosphere of the community. The artistic collective of the town can be seen throughout, with many of the businesses and families each displaying a unique quilting patterns on large poster boards on the side of their homes and buildings. The Visitors Centre looks to reflect this unique heritage of the community by abstracting the basic grid of the quilting patterns and using it as an organizational logic as can be seen reflected in the structures screening techniques. This project was designed and built as part of an optional two week studio with a small group of colleagues.
